Course Overview

In collaboration with highly qualified and experienced industry professionals, the Hospitality Managment Co-op (HMC) program (Diploma) is designed to provide students with the most updated and in-depth knowledge and skills in the hospitality world. Students not only get certificates and diploma from the prestigious American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI), but also gain valuable hands-on training during the co-op placement.

The 16-month HMC (Diploma) is comprised of 7 hospitality management courses, a career preparation course, and an 8-month co-op term in the industry.

Graduates will be able to use standard hotel operation systems, demonstrate deep understanding of hospitality management, practice efficient marketing and sales skills in hospitality segments, deal with human resource issues, hospitality facilities, and front desk operations, and manage food and beverage operation.

Course Length: 80 Hours

This course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the many entities that make up the hospitality industry, as well as an overview of today’s hot issues, including ethical challenges and management concerns. Students will get an up-to-date look at the dynamic hospitality field through numerous examples, exhibits, and statistics.

This course covers topics such as energy management, sustainability and green housekeeping, post 9/11 security issues, health concerns, and amenities and guest room furnishings. Students will be shown what takes to direct day-to-day housekeeping operations: from big-picture management issues to technical details such as cleaning.

This course focuses on a customer-oriented and practical approach for effectively marketing hotels and restaurants. It provides examples of exercises used by hospitality sales and marketing professionals. It also explores the increasing role of Internet in sales and marketing.

It addresses ways in which food and beverage operations have adapted management and operating tactics from other industries, what operations are doing to maintain or improve quality standards while reducing expenses, and how high-tech strategies are being used to give customers greater value for their dining dollars.

This shows students how to keep every aspect of hotel property running smoothly. This course takes a systematic approach to hospitality facilities issues, while also providing a summary based on functional spaces within a property. It includes case studies, as well as the latest information on facilities management and design issues.

Students will learn how to attract employees, minimize turnover, and maximize productivity by using the latest human resource strategies. The course also introduces the impact of the post-recession economy on recruiting, selection, retention, and turnover.

Students will be able to identify key supervisory skills, develop effective communication skills, increase productivity and raise performance standards, and turn basic human resource functions into motivational strategies.

Requirements

  1. High School Graduate
  2. 17+ years of age
  3. Proof of English proficiency through one of the following:
    • English 12 C+ or higher
    • IELTS 5.5 (no band lower than 5.0)
    • PLC Entrance Test 55% or above
  4. Students who did not graduate from a high school may be admitted as a mature student:
    • Be 21 years old as of the first day of classes of the program applied
    • Have not been engaged in full-time study for at least 24 months since the age of 18
    • Have demonstrated potential for success through academic, professional or volunteer activities and other accomplishments
    • Proof of English Proficiency through one of the following:
      • English 12 C+ or higher
      • IELTS 5.5 (no band lower than 5.0)
      • PLC Entrance Test 55% or above
