Course Overview

This course introduces learners to the fundamentals of the French language with an emphasis on everyday communication. It’s designed for those who have little or no knowledge of French. Through interactive lessons, students will learn essential vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and cultural context. By the end of the course, learners will be able to hold basic conversations, read and write simple texts, and express themselves in common real-life situations and business settings.

French is spoken in class as much as possible.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand and interpret simple spoken language in everyday contexts
  • Read and comprehend basic written texts
  • Communicate orally using simple language to greet others, express needs, ask questions, and respond appropriately
  • Write clear and concise simple sentences and short dialogues
  • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the target culture(s)
  • Use present and near future tenses to construct meaningful sentences
  • Communicate effectively in basic professional situations using the target language
  • Show intercultural awareness and apply foundational intercultural communication skills

Course Format

This course is available in both online and in-person formats.

Our online conversational courses provide a live virtual classroom experience via Zoom, where you can see, engage and receive real-time feedback with your instructor and classmates.

In-person classes take place at PLC Surrey – 201 – 10090 152 St., Surrey, BC, V3R 8X8.

How Am I Assessed?

This is a non-credit course and does not include letter or numerical grades. Instead, you will receive verbal feedback on your conversation and grammar skills from your instructor during class. Written homework is usually reviewed and corrected together in class. Some modules may also include quizzes for practice and review.

Record of Completion
A record of completion will be emailed within two weeks after the course ends to students who meet the course requirements.
