Attendance and Camera Usage Policy for All Students

Implementation Date: Continuation to the Attendance Policy
Position(s) Responsible for Administering this Policy: Campus Director

Purpose:

This policy outlines attendance expectations for all students enrolled at Pacific Link College (PLC), including those in both in-person and distance learning programs. It emphasizes the requirement for active participation during online classes, with a particular focus on the mandatory use of cameras during virtual sessions to ensure academic engagement.

  1. Attendance Requirements:
    • In-Person Programs: Students are required to attend all scheduled in-person classes and participate fully. Attendance will be recorded by the instructor, and students must inform the Campus team in advance if they are unable to attend.
    • Distance Learning Programs (Online): Students enrolled in online or hybrid programs are required to attend and actively participate in all virtual classes via the designated online platform. Students must ensure they have a reliable internet connection, functional audio, and a working camera for the duration of the class.
  2. Camera Usage Policy for Distance Learning: To promote an interactive and engaged learning environment, all students participating in online classes must adhere to the following guidelines:
    • Camera Requirement: Students must have their cameras turned on throughout the duration of the class unless otherwise directed by the instructor. This ensures that students are present and actively participating in the session.
    • Exceptions: There are no exceptions to this policy.
    • Visibility: Students must position their cameras in such a way that they are clearly visible to the instructor and class. Participation with a blank or obstructed camera may be treated as an unexcused absence.
    • Professional Environment: Students are expected to maintain a professional environment while attending virtual classes. This includes dressing appropriately, minimizing background noise, and ensuring that their background is suitable for a classroom setting. Virtual backgrounds may be used if appropriate.
  3. Absence and Attendance Compliance:
    • In-Person Attendance: Students who fail to attend 80% of their in-person classes without an approved leave may face academic penalties, including a failing grade or dismissal from the program.
    • Online Attendance: In online courses, students who fail to turn on their cameras or actively participate may be marked absent, even if logged into the virtual classroom. Students who fail to attend at least 80% of their online sessions with the camera on may face the same penalties as in-person students.
  4. Disciplinary Action for Non-Compliance:
    • First Violation: A student who fails to comply with the camera usage or attendance requirements for the first time will receive a warning and be reminded of the policy.
    • Second Violation: If a student continues to violate the attendance or camera usage requirements, they may be marked absent for the session, and a formal notice will be placed in their academic record.
    • Third Violation: Repeated non-compliance may result in academic penalties, including a failing grade for the course or, in severe cases, dismissal from the program.
