Children and Youth with Disabilities

Course Overview

This course provides introductory training on understanding, supporting, and advocating for children and youth with disabilities. It covers identifying a variety of disabilities among children and youth, as well as the associated care strategies. Students will learn how to address the unique needs of children and youth with disabilities, foster positive relationships, and create supportive environments that facilitate their development and participation.

Upon completion of this course, participants will have the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively support and advocate for children and youth with disabilities.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the basic definitions regarding special needs
  • Describe the framework of support for students with disabilities
  • Identify characteristics of infants at risk
  • Explain the role of family in special education services
  • List and differentiate the characteristics of students with learning disabilities
  • List and differentiate the characteristics of students with intellectual disabilities
  • List and differentiate the characteristics of students with severe disabilities
  • List and differentiate the characteristics of students with behaviour disabilities
  • List the characteristics of children on autism spectrum
  • List the characteristics of children with communication disorders
  • List the characteristics of children with hearing loss

  • A review of assignments and an overview of the daily lesson plan will be presented each day
  • Selected exercises to be completed outside of class time may be assigned
  • Development of critical thinking and customer service skills will be the focus of each class
  • Each class may begin with a daily lesson quiz
