Working with Families and Communities

Course Overview

This course looks at how those in health and social work can best work with families and larger diverse communities. The course provides comprehensive training on building effective partnerships with families and communities to support the well-being of individuals, particularly those with diverse needs or challenges. Students will learn how to recognize and respect cultural diversity, address barriers to engagement, and leverage community resources to enhance support and services.

Upon completion of this course, participants will have the knowledge and skills necessary to establish collaborative relationships with families and communities, advocate for the needs of individuals, and promote holistic well-being through inclusive and culturally responsive practices.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Describe cultural humility as an approach to diversity
  • Define the dimensions of diversity
  • Identify considerations for working with diverse communities
  • Explain the role of family in addictions and mental health
  • Explain the basic principles of working with a family
  • Describe the use of trans-inclusive language within a medical/care setting.

  • Lecture/presentation
  • Discussion
  • Individual assignments and research (facilitate)
  • Facilitated group work
  • Case studies
  • A review of assignments and an overview of the daily lesson plan will be presented each day
  • Selected exercises to be completed outside of class time may be assigned
  • Development of critical thinking and customer service skills will be the focus of each class
  • Each class may begin with a daily lesson quiz
